Fire rescue evacuated 71 people and nine pets from flooded Riviera Beach

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue evacuated 71 people and nine pets from flooded Riviera Beach neighborhoods. The Urban Search and Rescue Swiftwater Response Team started Monday night, stayed nearly 24 hours and used rafts and boats to check homes door to door. Crews also carried out two medical rescues, the department said.

Drones with thermal-imaging cameras helped crews find people in the Century Village area, and firefighters then waded in with high-water vehicles and brush trucks. In Riviera Beach, City Manager Williams Wilkins said more than 19 inches of rain fell in 12 hours, and police said more than 100 residents were rescued from homes in Lone Pine Estates.
